Class Description

Chinese brush painting, with its emphasis on the beauty of simplicity flowing brush strokes, and graceful designs, reflects time-honored principles of Chinese philosophy and culture.   Learning this art form motivates the students to observe critically, practice purposefully, express deliberately, explore creatively, compose artistically, develop a different way of thinking by following instructions and internalize imageries.

Students will learn to work with the bamboo brushes, using water color on rice paper.  They will also learn color theories while loading the brushes with the three primary colors plus black and white.  Students will develop confidence in painting through demonstrations, individual instructions and practice.  This course is ideal for people with or without previous art training.

Workshop Descriptions

Morning workshop – Lilies
The most stunning as the star of the garden that spotlights their showy blooms.  Let's study them closely from bud to bloom in many possible colors and varieties.  Lilies are a little challenging for the beginner brush painters.  But the effects are marvelous if we persist.

Afternoon workshop – Peony
Chinese gave it the title “The king of the brooms”. Peony is a symbol of prosperity. Let us capture its beauty in layers of silken-petals encircling a cluster of golden stamens with our brushes together.

Morning workshop – Sunflowers
This attention getter finds no competition in its brilliant shades of yellow.  We will attempt to capture the golden rays of sun on dramatic stalks not only with our brushes but also with our mood.  Let us follow the sun for our maximum joy.

Afternoon workshop – Irises
Let's dance with the swaying irises with our mind as we capture the long grassy leaves and the brightly colored petals with brushes.  You can choose to dress yours in blue, purple white or yellow.  They are elegant and delicate always.
